Turn one mistake into one adjustment

A small change is easier to evaluate on the next outing.

A useful starting point

Avoid rewriting the entire routine after a disappointing day. Describe one specific difficulty: a misplaced tool, an unclear label or an item that was awkward to pack. Choose one practical adjustment and record it. On the next outing, look for whether that change helped rather than expecting it to improve everything.

Try this sequence

  1. Name the difficulty without a general judgement
  2. Choose one change you can actually make
  3. Write what improvement would look like
  4. Review that single change after the next outing

A small worked example

If an accessory was repeatedly difficult to reach, move its secured enclosure to one clearly identified place. On the next preparation, check whether that single change helped. Leave the rest of the bag alone long enough to recognise the effect of the adjustment.

What to keep in your notes

Give the record a date and a recognisable title. Revisit it when planning, but check all time-sensitive information again through the appropriate current source. Your previous experience belongs in the notebook alongside those checks, rather than replacing them.
